There are two LAND institutional awards: Institutional Leadership and Outstanding Innovation. Each award has a different focus. The first focuses on a college program or activity that usually involves coordination of multiple departments or programs, the second focuses on new and creative work at the college.

 

EXCELLENCE IN INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP

 Purpose:   To spotlight, honor, and provide public recognition for the Community College that demonstrates outstanding collaborative leadership in the design, implementation, advocacy, and sustainment of a successful project which has improved the impact, quality and visibility of the liberal arts curriculum and learning outcomes in Michigan Community Colleges.  The winning team receives an engraved plaque presented to the College; each team member receives an award; the team and its accomplishments will be featured at LAND Conference.

 The Nomination should include a description which demonstrates:

·        Advancement of Liberal Arts education in the college teaching/learning mission and curriculum for the 21st century.

·        Promotion of educational access to new populations of learners, including outreach to populations and groups currently underrepresented.

·        Enhancement of the quality and outcomes of student learning in the Liberal Arts.

·        Collaborative models of work, i.e. inter-disciplinary teams, collaborative learning, cooperatives, cross disciplinary partnering and/or other forms of group productivity.

·        Integration of the Liberal Arts into courses or programs for occupational learning and career preparation.

 Award Selection Criteria:

  • The team demonstrates collaboration in the implementation of an initiative or program which is exemplary in advancing new ways to promote Liberal Arts in the teaching and learning mission and curricula of the College..
  • The team project/program is effectively designed to enhance the quality and potential outcomes for liberal learning  by students.
  • The team project/program provides an effective model for curriculum integration of liberal learning to enhance the student experience in career preparation.
  • The project/program promotes educational access to new populations of learners in the college community and enhances the potential for success among more diverse groups of learners.
  • The project has been sustained by the College for three years or more, and demonstrates a measurable impact on the College culture of teaching and learning.

 Eligibility for Leadership Award:

  • Two or more Liberal Arts educators, i.e. faculty and/or administrators, jointly engaged for three or more years in collaborative effort on a project or program that benefits the institution.
  • Partnerships between Liberal Arts faculty and Occupational faculty; between the Liberal Arts and Business/Industry Employers, or with Baccalaureate institutions will be eligible for the award.
  • Nominations may be submitted by faculty and/or administrators from any of the 28 community colleges in Michigan.  Nominations require the signed approval of the President of the College .
  • Teams previously nominated but not selected for the award may be re-nominated.  Winning teams are ineligible.

 

OUTSTANDING INNOVATION

 Purpose:  To spotlight, honor, and provide public recognition to a team or group that demonstrates exemplary collaboration and teamwork in the design, implementation, and assessment of an innovative course or project which provides an initiative to strengthen a current college program, or offers a new option for students to experience the liberal arts. An award will be presented to each member of the winning team and the Innovation Team and its project will be feature at the LAND Conference.

 The Nomination should include a description which demonstrates:

  • Advancement of the Liberal Arts education through innovation and collaboration in the teaching/learning goals of any course or discipline primarily dedicated to the Liberal Arts.
  • Promotion of educational access to new populations of learners, including outreach to populations or groups currently underrepresented.
  • Enhancement of the quality and outcomes of student learning in the Liberal Arts.
  • Collaborative models of course work, i.e. interdisciplinary teams, cross disciplinary partnering, collaborative learning,  and/or other forms of group productivity and may include outreach into occupational or career preparation.
  • Encouragement of the Liberal Arts for lifelong learning and enjoyment.

 Award Selection Criteria:

  • The team has implemented a course or project that is innovative and exemplary in advancing new ways to promote the Liberal Arts in the teaching and learning mission of the college.
  • The team course/project is effectively designed to enhance the quality of student learning and the potential advancement of liberal learning among community college students.
  • The team course/project provides an effective model for integration of liberal learning to enhance the student’s educational experience for life-long learning and enrichment.
  • The team course/project promotes educational access to new populations of learners in the community college and enhances the potential for successful experience among diverse groups of learners

 Eligibility for Innovation Award:

·       Two or more Liberal Arts educators jointly engaged for three or more years in collaborative effort on an innovative course or project that benefits students will be considered an eligible team for nomination to receive this innovation award.

  • Teams may include faculty from different or related Liberal Arts disciplines, a collaboration of Liberal Arts and Business or Occupational disciplines, or a college/ community collaboration .
  • Nominations may be submitted by faculty and/or administrators from any of the 28 community colleges in Michigan.  Nominations will require the signed approval of the Liberal Arts Dean or the President of the College.
  • Teams previously nominated that have not been selected for the award may be re-nominated for consideration.  Winning teams are ineligible.
