EXCELLENCE IN INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP WINNERS This award is given to the college which demonstrates outstanding institutional leadership in the liberal arts. The award recognizes a college which demonstrates institutional leadership and innovative programming for integrating the strengths of the liberal arts to provide expanded opportunities for learners in a Michigan Community College. 2000 - Delta College, for piloting the design and teaching models which established exemplary learning communities; for leading workshops and conferences to guide Delta College faculty and staff; and for initiating a successful Regional Conference on Collaborative Learning and Learning Communities which promoted this new culture of learning in other colleges in Michigan and neighboring states. 2001 - Henry Ford Community College, for development of the Center for the Study of work, featuring a collection of student produced oral histories on the work experience which was adopted as part of the Walter P. Reuther Library. This project included collaboration with the Hispanic Development Corporation, Wayne State University, and Ford Motor Company, which resulted in curricular innovations to prepare students for a productive work life as well as personal growth. 2002 - St. Clair County Community College, for its Curriculum Integration Team, a cross disciplinary team of 17 individuals representing full time and adjunct faculty in Mathematics, Political Science, Early Childhood Education, English, Reading, Speech Development Education, Center for Business and Industry, Nursing, Computer Information Systems, and Industrial Automation; and administrators from Tech Prep, Curriculum and Articulation, and Academic Services. 2003 - Schoolcraft College, for the Computer Graphics Technology Team. This team demonstrated collaborative leadership among the Computer Graphics faculty and students in innovative, exemplary and ever expanding projects which advanced liberal arts and student applications across the campus, in the local community, nationally and even internationally. These projects integrate computer graphics with other artistic media and academic curricula; and effectively link the liberal arts with technology for career advancement, personal growth and lifelong learning. 2004 - Muskegon Community College, for its Global Awareness Festival Team. The Global Awareness Festival includes five days of international learning activities on campus and incorporates participation by 4-year transfer institutions, local corporations doing global business and community organizations. More than 300 students participated in Global topic Investigations in 2003. 2005 – The award for excellence in Institutional Leadership was awarded to DELTA COLLEGE for its Collaborative Institutional Learning Project with Kenya. 2006 – The award for excellence in Institutional Leadership was awarded to SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE for the Schoolcraft College’s International Institute (SCII). The SCII was founded in 1994 by a group of faculty members to increase student, faculty and community awareness of international issues. Outgrowths of the Institute include international educational opportunities on “globally” relevant issues, an annual Multicultural Fair, and the development of a lecture series with a focus on a particular area of the world. SCII has made a significant contribution to preparing students for the world of work and informing employees and community stakeholders about global issues.
2007 - The award for excellence in Institutional Leadership was awarded to LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE for its Molecular Biotechnology Associate in Applied Science Degree program.
2008 - The award for excellence in Institutional Leadership was awarded to MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE for the "Macomb 2 Oakland" Program. Macomb Community College and Oakland University have actively collaborated to ensure successful transfer of their mutual students. The two institutions have embarked on a joint admission and concurrent enrollment program. Both institutions have taken charge of the process of students moving back and forth between institutions in order to better inform, advise and serve their mutual students. Numerous obstacles or barriers were removed in the process.
OUTSTANDING INNOVATION WINNERS
This award is given to outstanding collaborative teams who promote an increased awareness of the Liberal Arts through innovation and leadership. 2001 - Randal Crawford and Mary Beth Looby from Delta College for their innovative learning community in career preparation combining art, computer technology and writing - all aspects applied to the student publication of an award-winning magazine and an interactive CD containing student art, writing, music, and animations. 2002 - Humanities Team consisting of Carolyn Johnson, Dennis Mulder and Valerie Vander Mark from Montcalm Community College for their exemplary two-semester Humanities sequence, now required for all Arts and Sciences degree candidates. This cross-disciplinary team has energized student attitudes toward literature, music, art and drama through creative instruction combined with creatively funded extra- curricula arts trips and events providing low cost student opportunities for liberal learning. 2003 - Developmental Writing Team consisting of Barry Alford, Lucia Elden and Jim VanderMey from MidMichigan Community College for the design , implementation and assessment of an innovative course in academic writing, a complement course to Freshman Composition, which successfully enable underprepared students to be successful in rigorous writing courses and college courses in general. 2004 - Music Technology Team consisting of Michael Nealon, Cesar Potes and Peter Hulen from Lansing Community College for exemplary collaboration to develop an innovative Music Technology Lab and new courses at LCC; to infuse technology into the music curriculum; and to develop an on-line version of Music Appreciation which incorporates music technology and provides access to new populations of student learners. 2005 – The award for Outstanding Innovation was awarded to ALPENA COMMUNITY COLLEGE for its Journal for the Arts. 2006 – No award given.
2007 - The award for Outstanding Innovation was awarded to HENRY FORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE for its Virtual Theatricality Lab.
2008 - The award for Outstanding Innovation went to LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE for the Ghana Service Learning Experience. The program has progressed from an earlier version of cultural visitation to a substantial course that includes pre-departure acquisition of basic Twi, a socio-political history of Ghana, service learning experience in Ankaase, Ghana and cultural immersion in the Ankaase community. Participants include students and professors of nursing, dental hygiene, engineering technology and liberal studies. Travel and logistics are coordinated with the Center for International and Intercultural Education.
