IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR THE
SAKE OF THE
STUDENT SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The LAND Steering Commitee has determined that after thirteen years in the same format,, we must rethink the Student Scholars Conference. The Commitee has agreed that we will solicit and judge student research papers as we have traditionally and that any work done by community college students in 2009 calendar year is eligible for submission. Our submission deadline will move to December. Student Scholars will culminate at our February 2010 LAND Conference in some form.
The Committee will work out the details. In the mean time, we encourage colleagues to collect outstanding student papers. All criteria for papers remain unchanged and can be found in the Student scholars section of this website.
We solicit papers from students at Michigan’s community colleges in virtually every academic area (e.g. Humanities, social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Technical Studies). Three distinguished faculty from statewide community colleges evaluate each submission. Three papers in each category are then selected for presentation.
Distinguished faculty from Michigan four-year colleges or universities judge the conference papers according to these percentages: research, 35%; writing, 30%; and presentation, 35%. The judges choose one paper from each concurrent session to be published in full text in the conference journal. Abstracts of all conference presentations are published. The student researchers and their mentors receive recognition at the conference and in the publication.
